The Showdown at The Cherry!!!

By Travis Thomas

Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last couple of months, I’m sure every one of you has the date August 28th, circled on your calendar. That’s the day one of the most anticipated matchups in youth football takes place. The Gwen Cherry Baby Bulls christen their new field, against none other than the 2 time defending national champions, the Richmond Giants. This game has captured the imaginations of fans throughout south Florida. Fans of all leagues have given pause to debate the outcome of this clash.

The Bulls are looking to avenge two heartbreaking losses from last season. Gwen Cherry led in both of those contests. The loss in the championship game had to be especially painful for the Bulls. After watching a 20-6 lead evaporate, the Bulls made some changes. They’ve tweaked their coaching staff, bringing in some of the best coaches in the area to complement head coach Corey Smith. The ‘Cherry has a rock solid core of returnees, plus a dynamic group of newcomers. The most talked about of these newcomers is none other than YouTube sensation, Joseph “Jojo” Robinson.

The Giants enter this contest riding a two year winning streak, but as anyone who’s ever played or coached against the Bulls will tell you, it’s hard to win on 71st and 22nd. Nevertheless Richmond has a lot of intangibles on their side. They’ve played in high stakes games before, and most of their biggest wins of late, have been on the road. Their coaching staff is led by Eddie Alford, this year his main addition is an offensive line coach from Doral. Most of his playmakers from last season return, including but not limited to Tim Irvin.

With future D1 prospects on both sides of the field, the fans are going be in for a treat. Not only is this game garnering huge attention locally, fans all over the country will be paying close attention, as the winner of this contest will be one the early favorites to represent the Southeast region at Nationals. This will be a spectacle on a level all by itself. I know where I’m going be at 1 p.m., the question is where are you going be when,” The Showdown at the Cherry”, kicks off?

TIME TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST OVERTOWN FELLAS!!! BOTH TEAMS LOOKED KINDA SLOPPY IN THE BEGINNING BUT RICHMOND MADE ALL OF THE BIG PLAYS DOWN THE STRETCH! YOUR QB HAS TO COMPLETE PASSES. EVERYTIME YALL SPREADED THEM OUT THEY HAD TROUBLE COVERING THOSE WRs. THERE WAS A MAN OPEN ON EACH PASS PLAY! YOUR QB WAS YOUR WEAKNESS. YOU ALL OUTMATCH THEM WITH ATHELETIC TALENT, SO LET'S TIGHTEN UP ON THE COACHING.......

Congrats to the Richmond Giants on a well played & well coached game. I was man enough to get on here to talk trash with everybody but at the end of the day i am still a coach. Richmond dominated both of our fronts, which we could ill afford to happen given the personel that we have. The giants were smart, quicker, & more physical up front on both sides of the ball. #7 is an underrated player for the Giants, his speed & size were a factor on crucial plays. We have some more work to do, but that is apart of the game. I can promise everyone on Gennexxt that we will be there in the end for the rematch! Richmond was the better team on yesterday, they deserve all of their props! You all will see a better team than what we showed on saturday. P.S. Don't sleep on us Overtown, we will be there for that 1pm appointment on Sat.......
