Vikings Super Bowl: Anything Less Is "Unacceptable"

Vikings Super Bowl: Anything Less Is “Unacceptable”

By Brandon A. Odoi

(August 15, 2010)-Losing is not something head coach Buddy Bailey has done much of. Last season his 135 pound Viking team only lost one game; however, that game was in the championship game to the Ft. Lauderdale Hurricanes.

This year, Coach Buddy has taken that heartbreaking loss and turned it into a motivational movement. His new team repeats one phrase as they are prompted by his question: “Anything less than a super bowl is what? In unison they all shout “unacceptable.”

They are focused, and for good reason.

For much of the 2009 football season, the Scott Lake Vikings 135 pound team was feared. Websites like You Tube chronicled their pillage of teams through South Florida Youth Football league’s South division and through the third round of the playoffs. “Welcome to the Slaughter House,” is a tag line of one of their highlight reels. The machismo of Coach Buddy’s unit was on full display, and well deserved by their works on the field.

Most in the youth football community in South Florida pegged them as the best team or one of the best two teams around. It was for that reason that their disappointing loss in the championship game was so shocking. They were completely picked apart by a team that had studied a well veiled weakness. Although Coach Buddy’s team adjusted at the half and mounted a comeback, they ran out of time.

“That’s why my defensive coordinator is coaching the 165 pound this year,” Coach Buddy said when asked about his off season changes.

And there are many other moves that were made in hopes to redeem last year’s disappointing lost.

Buddy Bailey is somewhat of an optimist coaching legend. He has several super bowl championships to his credit at both Miami Lakes and most recently in 2008 at Scott Lake before the name change to Miami Gardens Vikings. All of his titles were gained on the 135 pound level. He was mentored by his father who spent years building up the Miami Lakes Jaguar program. His father taught him the importance of fielding disciplined teams and that has always been a trademark of a Buddy Bailey coached squad.

Last year was the second time coach Buddy lost in the championship game as he dropped a 2-0 contest in 2007. But just like in the year following his first championship loss, Coach Buddy expects to regain his crown again this year. After all, anything less is unacceptable.
